Today I want to share two funny blogs about urban chickens. They are both written by the same guy and the same 3 chickens. I found the perfect place to buy my chicks today and am getting very excited to get them. They will stay in a temporary house for the first few weeks and then will have their proper home once we move into our new place! So, in honor of this excitement I am sharing two funny blogs on chickens. The first is a day by day documentation of chicks as they get their grown-up feathers and the second is a continuation of the lives of those chicks. If you are temped to pass these blogs by let me share that these chicks are named Noodle Soup, Salad Sandwich, and Pot Pie! How can you pass that kind of funny up? Check it out!!!
Chicken Canidate #2 February 23, 2010
This lovely bird is the Rhode Island Red. It is known to be a great egg layer-which is really what we want. They even begin laying eggs at 4 months. I’m really feeling torn between this one and the Buff Orpington that I showed before. Maybe I should do two of each? What do you think? I think that could make for a happy little coop! I’m planning to get my new friends at the end of next month. Decisions, decisions! I hope to have a home for them by that time as well! I have had one person offer to make me a coop. Perhaps as a birthday present since I have a big birthday coming up at the beginning of April! I’ll keep you posted on all chicken developments!
Indianapolis Chickens February 22, 2010
Here is a link to an article about chickens in the city of Indianapolis! Looks like my girls will be safe. I have done my own research but was relieved to see further support for it. Many cities in Indiana are not so friendly to urban chickens. I am thankful that as of now I can go along with my project! Looking forward to some tasty fresh eggs!

The Naked Chef and Chickens February 16, 2010
Here is a link to a great article about Jamie Oliver otherwise known as the Naked Chef.He has done a lot of work in England to educate people about how chickens are raised. Now he is working on childhood obesity and making the connection between what we eat and how it is made. At one point, he is meeting with a classroom full of students and talking to them about nutrition. There is also a video here where he holds up veggies and asks students to name them and they can’t! Hello! That is crazy! Check out this read and video!

Ask for forgiveness or permission? January 26, 2010
In my on-going quest for backyard chickens I have been checking to see if this is actually legal. As far as I can find there is nothing in any Marion County laws or ordinances about keeping chickens within the city limits. Some places say I need to check with Animal Control. Planning a phone call to them soon, but wondering if I keep a low profile if that is a necessary step. Maybe blogging about it isn’t keeping a low profile.
Then my next question is should I ask my neighbors? We live in a duplex so I feel like I should ask the people who we share the yard with. Maybe the lure of fresh eggs would sweeten the deal. Then how far do I take this? Ask the people on the other side of the fence? I’m only worried that this might give them the opportunity to say no when they might otherwise not care. Lots of thinking to do on that one. I know that chickens are quiet and I plan to take great care of them and make sure that they don’t stink up the neighborhood. I’d hate to spend all of the money to feed, house and care for them just to give them away once the neighbors complain. They don’t seem like the type and I’m really nice to them when their kid throws his basketball into my garden. Thoughts? Anyone?
The lovely chicken I have posted here is the front runner of chickens that I’d like to purchase. Isn’t she pretty! She is a Buff Orpington. All the info says that they are gentle birds who lay brown eggs and tolerate cooler climates. I have a couple other breeds that I am looking into, but so far this one is the winner! I love how chubby she is! Of course, I will be getting mine as chicks to help with the human to chicken relationship. That way when I have to pick them up or check them out they won’t peck me to death. I’m looking forward to seeing those baby chicks!
Urban Chicken Article January 24, 2010
Here is the link to great article that talks about those of us who want to rethink city life. I had never thought about one of the barriers to urban chickens would be an association with poverty! Interesting thoughts on both sides-check it out!
